This is a selection of a native North American species. Consider applying a thick mulch around the root zone in winter to protect it in exposed locations or colder microclimates. It is quite intolerant of urban pollution, therefore inner city or urban streetside plantings are best avoided, and will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. This tree does best in full sun to partial shade. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 70 years or more. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 1 foot from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. The shaggy antique red bark adds an interesting dimension to the landscape. Hanging from spreading branches that sweep upwards at their tips, are long trailing curtains of dark gray-green foliage. The scale-like sprays of foliage remain bluish-green throughout the winter. Quite majestic, Chamaecyparis nootkatensis Pendula (Nootka Cypress) is a medium-sized, evergreen conifer forming a strongly weeping, pyramidal tree. Weeping Nootka Cypress is primarily valued in the landscape for its highly ornamental weeping form. Weevil larvae, white grubs with brown heads, feed on roots deep in the soil. They feed on leaves and bark, leaving characteristic notches along the edges of cypress needles. They have tear-shaped and hard-shelled bodies, averaging 3/8 inch long. Adults are brown beetles with long snouts.
